Perhaps the most famous Derbyshire food is the Bakewell Pudding and you can taste
the real thing, in Bakewell, where specialist shops export them all over the world.
But that is by no means Derbyshire's and the Peak District's only contribution to the nation's waistlines. Ashbourne gingerbread - traditionally made in the shape of a man - comes from the charming market town at the gateway to Dovedale, and Wakes Cakes were
made to celebrate village festivals.
Hartington was famed for its cheeses, not least the blue veined Stilton - permitted to be made only in a very small area and though the factory has now closed, you can still visit the cheese shop to find out about its salty-creamy attraction, along with Buxton Blue, perhaps atop another speciality the floppy, pancake sized Derbyshire or Staffordshire oatcake.
Farm shops, farmers' markets and country markets are the best places for locally grown, carefully tended produce, such as bacon, sausages and ham, beef, chicken, lamb, vegetables,
cheeses, eggs, honey and preserves.
For those with pure drinking habits Buxton, Ashbourne and Britannia
(from Wildboarclough) are world renown for their mineral '
water. These are taken from crystal clear springs that
bubble up through the natural stone filter from miles underground. Buxton Mineral water is now the water of choice at Wimbledon though if visit the town take a bottle to fill up at St Annes Well. A growing number of micro breweries are scattered around the region, where high quality ales are produced by small teams of committed people.
