Roston in Derbyshire

Roston village is situated in the Parish of Norbury, about 14 miles west of Derby. Roston, mentioned in Domesday as Roschintun, centres on the area known as the Bullring. It is unclear as to wether this was associated with bull baiting or the cattle market, which was held in Shields Lane. It is famous for it's connection with George Eliot, who's father Robert Evans, was born on Roston Common, attended a local school and sang in the choir at Norbury church. Members of the Evans family, grandfather, grandmother and aunt( George, Mary and Susannah) are buried in Norbury chuchyard.

Half way between Norbury church and Roston in Lid Lane are the school and the village hall which along with the Roston Arms pub are the social centres for the local community. The original school was in Green Lane, the present one being built in 1894 when the old one became overcrowded.

Many of the old buildings in Roston are well preserved. There were once 2 methodist chapels which have now been put to other uses and a post office cum general store. Though population numbers may have dropped over the last century, the community remains a flourishing one.
