Chellaston
Chellaston in Derby has become another suburb of Derby with a great many new houses having been built over the last couple of decades. The expansion actually started when the railway arrived in Chellaston in 1873, but the area does seem to retain an independent character.
During medieval times, Chellaston gained a great reputation for the pure white alabaster that was quarried here. The quarries were closed and then reopened in Victorian times, with plaster and brick making industries growing alongside. The alabaster was used for figure carving, by artists from all over the Midlands, and examples of their work can be found in many churches throughout the area.
St Peters Church is essentially 13th century but has been added to over the years. It is the only ancient building left complete. It is small and consists of a west tower which was rebuilt in 1842, a nave and south aisle, and a lower Perp chancel. It contains an incised slab to John Bancroft, who died in 1557, and his wife.
There are parts of a waffle and daub framed cottage in Chapel Lane and a cruck cottage adjacent to the Corner Pin pub. Other bars include the Lawns Hotel, Chellaston Bowls Club, the British Legion, the Rose and Crown, and The Bonnie Prince.
There are four schools in Chellaston, Chellaston Infant School on School Lane, Chellaston Junior School, on Maple Drive, Homefields Primary School on Parkway and Chellaston School with a 6th form college) on Swarkestone Road. Chellaston School's catchment area includes the nearby villages of Melbourne, Aston-on-Trent, Ticknall, Barrow upon Trent and Weston-on-Trent.
Shops include a Co-operative supermarket on the corner of High Street and Derby Road, Post Office near Station Road and a Tesco Express.
Memories of the former village survive through paintings by Frank Gresley and his 2 sons, Cuthbert and Harold, all local artists.
Chellaston Women's Institute meets on the 2nd Tuesday each month (no meeting in August) at 7.15pm in St Peter's Church Hall, St Peter's Road, Chellaston.
Visitors made most welcome. We have lively meetings with good speakers so do come along and see what it's all about.
