Alvaston Alvaston is a large suburb of Derby, lying 2 miles south of the city centre. It has a large busy shopping centre at the very busy junction of London Road and the ring road. The area was once covered by swampland, roamed by large animals. Hippopotamus, elephants, brown bear, hyena and bison all roamed freely in this area. Evidence of their existence has appeared during excavations at Allenton. Alvaston probably owes its name to Allwald, who founded a Saxon village here. In the second half of the 19th century, it expanded rapidly and London Road became the A6 with the arrival of the motor car. Electric trams replaced the horse bus service in 1904, and this itself was replaced by trolley buses which ran to Wyndham Street off Harvey Road in 1932. The building of the ring road virtually divided Alvaston in two and development has continued, especially over the last decade or so, south east of Coronation Ave along Shardlow Road. The church of St Michael and All Angels was totally rebuilt by Henry Isaac Stevens of Derby in 1856-57, the previous church, an Anglo Saxon foundation, having much mid 14th century fabric and tower rebuilt in 1772. Alvaston once had its own cinema, the Rex on London road, which opened in 1925 and closed in 1966. Alvaston Park with its lake and tree trail is a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of the suburb centre.
